I’m writing this from the dodgy bed of my dodgy room in sunny, tropical Brisbane. I’m here for Finders Keepers design market and it’s Sunday morning and I’m about to hop in the shower and get ready for day 2 (the same shower that has dripped big loud echoing drops from the shower head for 2 nights). It’s been such a fabulous market so far. Despite the dodgy room. By which I mean BED BUGS! GROSS!!
When Crayon Chick goes on the road it’s far from a glamorous adventure! When you travel alone there’s no such luxuries like taking a break to stand outside in a queue to order lunch from a hipster food van. Instead, there’s a pack of rice cakes and cheese in a jar under my table to graze on. Yep, you read that right. Cheese. In a jar. Don’t judge, it’s the yummiest thing (for a cheese head like myself) that doesn’t need to be kept in a fridge, won’t spill and won’t mess my hands. Glamour, all the way, baby!
In the month since returning from Cambodia I’ve been on the road to my hometown 5 hours away for my Mum and Dad’s 50th anniversary. Crocheting all the way, of course. I flew to Sydney for Grand Designs Live (crocheting on the flight the whole way, too) and imposed myself on my best friend’s hospitality for 4 nights. Which is a massive deal, she’s a freelance writer who works from home which meant I was imposing not only on her physical space, but her head space as well. To the point where she gave up her bed for me in order to keep working though the night and sleeping on the blow up mattress on the floor in her spare room when she was done. IN HER OWN HOME! That is the absolute definition of Best Friend right there.
And now it’s Brisbane. With bed bugs. But I’m thrilled with the response to my new products and I’m so inspired to keep going. There’s still a lot coming up on my schedule for the next month. It will be more or less the same. One great massive Groundhog Day. With the exception of dodgy rooms, I hope.
The time when Kevin McCloud dropped by and said “Wow!”
I had a stall in the Design Arcade at the recent Grand Designs Live in Sydney. It involved crossing the Anzac Bridge each day which was a great delight, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before and it’s just beautiful, all elegance and grace. Not bad for a bridge! I attended not really knowing what to expect, hoping there would a chance spotting of Kevin McCloud …..
Yep, this happened! A personal highlight for me because I’ve had such a Kevin crush for years from watching Grand Designs on the TV. My fellow designers in the Design Arcade were pretty much the coolest group of people I’ve met. And they were all on hand to take photos of my Kevin Moment on their iPhones!
In fact, my trip to Sydney was a series of highlights, including meeting interior designer Shaynna Blaze who selected some of my work to style her space in the Design Arcade called ‘Shaynna Blaze Loves”. Yep, that was pretty good, too. And then there was my lovely neighbour from Milkcart who bought a weave bowl and kept it on display with their lovely Scandinavian inspired furniture. Doesn’t it look like a perfect match!
